5 Great Otway National Park Walks

(Nearby Attractions)

Stretching from Torquay to Princetown, the Great Otway National Park is one of the treasures of the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia.  Covering over one hundred thousand hectares, visitors can lie on sandy beaches, hike through redwood forests, or enjoy one of the regions many walks.  There are over 35 Otway National Park walks to be found in the national park and Otway Ranges.

Below are 5 of the best Otway National Park walks you should definitely consider trying:

1. Beauchamp Falls

Distance: 3 KM
Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Strenuous

The 20 metre high Beauchamp Falls crashes over the edge of a cliff into a large pool on the edge of Beech Forest.  You can’t reach the falls directly, but you can get to a viewing platform by taking a rather strenuous but beautiful walk through Mountain Ash forests and thick ferns. The walk takes half-an-hour each way, starting in a picnic area just off Aire Valley Road. In wet conditions, the path can be slippery, so be careful if it’s raining.

  1. Head North West on Kawarren East Road.
  2. Turn left onto Colac-Lavers Hill Road/C155.

2. Lake Elizabeth Walk

Distance: 1.5 KM (lake only) or 4 KM (circuit)

Time: 1 hour (lake only) or 2 hours (circuit)

Lake Elizabeth is found deep in the Otways, the result of the valley being flooded over fifty years ago.  You can walk to or around the lake depending on how much time you have or take guided canoe tour of the lake.  If you get there early enough, you might be lucky enough to catch sight of the wonderfully shy Australian platypus.
